House of Representatives
Per P rCSS Association. Soutember 5. - Aft'.ri»«‘ jDi « f,,fc ' ; m<l af H r r S^ e F 81 « A , L,r had spoken on Mr Gninineniberi* !inout) tiie p rcm i er said ness *7 doty on boilers, if agreed that M ]e n j cl jnoau the payment of t°>o . j. 2000 per annum by the dairy- ? boa LdWry.. Remission .'affecting i«£ ; i,iastry had been made to the tnnt of about £BOOO per annum was at [a loss to understand whether the concessions made were ttopreciatod. Ho was disposed to think they wore not, and much doubted, under tiro circumstances, whether the Government was justified in going on with the tariff at all It was quite evident that if a section of the Govommout’s own party entered into an alliance with a section of tire Opposition *to change duties provided for in regard to particular items in the tariff, they would bring about a position which the Ministry could not accede to. If the Government was to bo treated in this manner, he thought most members would agree that, to put it mildly, ho had been treated in a grossly unfair manner, and he thought tho Ministry ought to know whore they were. A leading Opposition member had moved a reduction on a certain item, and was supported by members of the Government party in consequence of some arrangement come to. . After further discussion, progress was reported, and tho House adjourned at 1.45, Tho House met at 2.30. ■ a Bill amending the law relating to licensing polls was brought down by Governor’s message, and road a first time. One amendment is to enable a poll to bo taken if Parliament is dissolved before the expiration of three years, the result to take effect on the day on which Parliament would have expired by effluxion of time. 1 The House weut into Committee of first class taken, Public Health Department, total vote £38,952 i 'considerable discussion took place regarding tho sanatoriums, which continued till the adjournment. The House resumed at 7.30. Tho Public Health Department vote passed unaltered. Tho next geiass taken was Meutal Hospitals and Charitable Departments, total vote £108,5)24.8 This was also discussed at considerable length. Replying to various speakers, tho Hon. Powlds said a now Maternity Homo was rcciuired in Wellington, and the Government could not procure it under a cost of £BOOO, and it would bo no bettor than the Christchurch institution. Referring to homes for Incurables, ho stated that was a inatter being provided for by all progressive Boards ot tho colony. Referring to infectious diseases, his own impression was that tho law as It existed was sufficient to cause Central Boards to provide _ for infectious diseases in the districts, but the matter was being "considered by . the law officers, and if ;au amend- ■ ment of the law was required an ; amending Bill would be brought down this session.
