Second Day.
Rain again set in for the concluding day of the races, making it very unpleasant for everybody. The enclosures were in a bad state but a plentiful supply of straw was greatly appreciated. Despite such disadvantages the attendance for both clays was just above the average and the meeting was carried to a very satisfactory conclusion. The totalisaror ‘investments for the mooting amounted to £13,376 against £12,420 put through last year or an increase of £1136. Messrs Neylou and Spriggens, with their efficient staff, and promptitude gave their numerous patrons every reason to ho weil satisfied. The racing on tho whole was interesting, tho fields being satisfactory, while several finishes •wore very close Tho events were got off promptly and tho various officials are again to bo complimented on the management which left nothing to ho desired. In the Hack Steeplechase there was a chapter of accidents and tho rider of Bullworth, P. Wlutohouse, received serious internal injuries and had to bo removed to tho private hospital at tho Junction. Other riders esI caped with a shaking. A protest | %vas entered in the last race by the | owner of Pcarlie against tho rider of | Nov for alleged boring m tho straight. Wilson 3 Also started : 71 Gawain, 106 Frisco, Waihuku was in front all the way, and iron very comfortably by a length from St. Claimor, with Silver Shell two lengths further away. Time, Imin 23sec. Young) 3 Also started : 227 Waitoa, 36 Nothorby, 25 Waikura, 14 Waterworks, 20 .Eaop, 79 Lifebuoy. Oryx and Netherby made the running over the first half-mile, with TEsop hopelessly in the rear. Going down the back Oryx and Poplar were out in front. Pour furlongs from homo Poplar drew away two lengths clear of Oryx, who was displaced halfway round the home turn by Earmark, who was making up a lot of ground quickly. Poplar was still in front at the straight entrance. Earmark, however, threw out a strong challenge, and in a keen finish Poplar maintained a length advantage to tho post. Time, 3min 47seo. (H.' Telford) 3 Also started : 228 Peruvian (fell), 100 Pilot (fell), 224 Bullworth (fell), 44 Kereru (fell), 11 Whipcord (fell), 25 Mongolia (fell). Peruvian and Bullworth showed the way at the first fence; At the four furlong post the order of tho leading division was Peruvian, Whipcord and Mongolia, the first two being still in front entering the straight. Bullworth moved up and joined Peruvian crossing the double in front of the box. Going down the back the second time Peruvian, and Bullworth were out two lengths clear of Redshank, who was going well. Mcngotiaand Pilot throw out at post and rails on tho turn. As they came at the third fence from homo Peruvian still had a bit to the good from Bullworth who toppled over leaving danger threatening to Peruvian from Redshank. Two fences from home Redshank had Peruvian settled and the latter came down leaving Redshank out by himself. Kereru fell at tho same fence as Peruvian. Morpeth followed Redshank home with a big gap between and another separating the former from Columbine tho only other to finish. Time, smin 33sec. Divs, £l4 2s and £1 14s. Marton Handicap, 1 mile and distance. 288 Air P. Preston’s St. Joe, Handsome Jack—Muriwai, 9.0, (C. Jenkins) 1 126 Air H. Whitney’s Saga, 7.6, (L. Wilson) ... ... ... ... 2 343 Air H. 11. Hire and St. Joe led clown the straight, but going down the back Saga moved up and took charge. Four furlongs from home Saga was some three lengths clear of St. Joe, after whom thorp was another gap. Saga led into the straight with St. Joe closing up. At the distance St. Joe ranged alongside Sftga, and in a keen finish the former had the better of the argument by a length, Lyrist 3 lengths away. Time, 2min 13seo. Divs, £2 11s and J3l 13s. Welter Handicap, 7 furlongs. 344 Mr J. Bull’s, jnr., Belario, The Officer—Sprite, 8.9, (A. Olliver) 1 130 Mr J. Woolstou’s White Lie, 9.12, (F. The leading division going down the back was Commander, Belario, White Lie. Carrie’s Lerida, 9.0, (A. MoConnon)... ... ... ... 3 Also ran: 28 Waitoa, 203 Hurimoana, 130 Raimi. Compass was first to show out and led from Kahui past the stand with Hurimoana a long way out. The order going down the back was Compass, Lerida and Raimi. Three furlongs from home Dulcinea put in a fast run and at the straight entrance headed Compass, ■who lost a lot of’ ground at her fences. Compass came again over the last hit and was only beaten by a head at the post. Lerida was several lengths away. Time, Smim 17 2-ssecs. Divs, £2 2s and £2 17s. Final Scurry, 4 furloni-s. 400 Mr J. At the distance Greenleaf pat ip p f dptermmed challenge on the outside! ’As they ..neared' the post Jenkins brought Pear lie up with a rattle oh the rails'and suffered defeat by Ney by a short npclj, Greenleaf another nock away third.
