At 'Marton Court to-day, before Messrs A. H. Sutcliffe ami R. Wilson, J-'sP., a native named Tutorehu, was committed for trial to the Palmerston Supreme Court nest week, for assaulting a young woman with intent to commit rape, at Kakariti , on August 38th.
The Auckland Flourmillors’ Union passed a resolution expressing alarm at the proposal to [abolish the duty on Hour, and urging Government not to permit such a monstrous suicidal policy. Influenza is prevalent in the Auckland district. Almost every child is suffering or is just recovering from the effects of the complaint and there is hardly a firm of employers that is not working short handed from the same cause.
Yesterday’s collections in aid of Dunedin Y.M.C.A. Building Fund, amounted to £931 8s Gd, bringing the total up to £9221 6s lOd. Donations given yesterday included one of £SOO from the Union' Steamship Company.
The Spring Shew under the auspices of the Auckland Horticultural Show was opened yesterday. The entries were larger than on any previous occasion. In the champion class alone fully 2000 Narcissi were shown.
The executive of the 1908 Band Contest to bo hold at Now Plymouth has resolved on February 24th to 28th inclusive as the dates for the contests and that the test selection shall bs played indoors. The draft programme shows oyer £3OO in prize money, all of j which and expenses is, guaranteed locally.
A Wellington telegram states that “Sir William Stewart, who recently approached tho Minister for Eailways with a view to having molasses for starving stock carried on railways free, yesterday received an intimation from the Minister that tho request has been acceded to,” The Departmental wheels move so slowly that the concession lias been granted after all need for it has vanished. We regret to hear that Mr 8,. Johnston, Marton, is seriously ill. He was on his way homo on Wednesday evening, about six o’clock, and going through a paddock was seized with a fit. The newly formed instrumental and vocal Glee Club at Sandou will hold their first practice next week. Tho highest prico known for owe hoggets in Sandou district was realised by Mr S. The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile, Poildiug, will bold a special unreserved dairy clearing sale on Monday next on account of Mr Samuel Hall, on the farm, opposite Ridge Road Creamery, Apiti. Tho forty cows which are to bo offered arc all young and have been specially selected as being close to profit. The remainder will be sold iu Apiti yards later on as they come close to profit. Mr Hall’s cows are known to bo exceptionally good, and tho herd is undoubtedly cue of the host iu the district. There arc also five half-draughts to ho offered, Tho holding of tho North Wairarapa Rifle Association meeting, which was to have taken place on tho 31st of the present mouth, has boon definitely abandoned, owing to the Defence Department declining to allow the Opaki range to be used, on tho ground of it being dangerous. Application was made for a dispensation to permit tho holding of a oneday meeting, but the Department decided against granting tho dispensation. Tho time intervening before the date of the meeting being so short precluded the opportunity of securing another range. Last vear Georgo How Chow, a wealthy" Chinaman, married to a European, loft with his family on a trip to China, .intending to stay for some time. The family, uot_ caring for tho change, returned to Gisborne, but tho husband, having invested funds there, remained to realise. How Chow subsequently failing to return, bis wife revisited Hong Kong, having iu tho received disquieting nows. All efforts to find her husband! 1 failed, a'ud it is feared he mot with foul play by lav,dess bauds. Mrs How Chow has returned to Gisborne with her son, aged 11, who bad been in a college in Hong Kong. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather there was a largo audience at tho Opera House, Marton,_ on Wednesday evening, when tho juvenile opera, “The Japanese Girl,” was successfully.staged by a troop of amateurs from Feilding. The orchestral music was good, and the very pretty dresses of the large number of ladies and little girls taking part presented a striking spectacle. Tho acting and singing of the juveniles was decidedly good, and several of the performers were enthusiastically recalled. Those responsible fertile production of this pretty little opera are to be congratulated on the successful performance of the youngsters. The Licensing Polls Amendment Bill, brought before the House last night, provides that If at any time Parliament is dissolved before it lias been two years iu existence, a licensing poll shall bo taken at the next general election thereafter, notwithstanding anything to the contrary iu tho Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act Amendment Act, 1895. But the operation of such poll shall bo suspended until the day when the Parliament so dissolved would otherwise have expired by effluxion of time, and such poll shall take effect accordingly as if taken on that day, unless it has already been superseded by a subsequent poll. Until the poll so suspended in its operation takes effect, iu accordance with tins Act, or is so superseded, tho poll in force at the time of the taking of such first-mentioned poll shall continue iu full force aud operation. Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, aud Dunedin, iu which cities there are four electorates, are each created iuto one electorate for the purpose of the licensing poll. Tho quarterly mooting of tho Primitive Methodist Church, in tho Unicorn be circuit, was held on Monday last at tho residence of Mr O. Managh. Tho attendance at the K-rvices, especially in. the Halcombo Church, had been seriously interfered with by epidemics of colds aud other complaints during the quarter, also somewhat by unfavourable weather. Tho membership remains stationary. The total expenditure for the quarter was £54 7s 5d and the total receipts were within os 3d of being the same amount. This income so nearly balancing the outgo at the end of a winter quarter was largely duo to tho substantial assistance Tendered by tho yearly tea meeting at Beacousflold, which this year netted £8 Is fid ; and the bachelors’ social at Halcombe which brought In £4 2s fid. _ To all contributors and workers iu connection with these events tho heartiest thanks are given. The colony being divided iuto five districts, and Halcombo being included iu the Wellington district, delegates were appointed to attend the district meeting to bo held at Foxton iu October next. The question of ministerial supply was deferred till December quarter day. At the close of the meeting supper was served to the company by Mrs Managh. The next meeting will bo held at the Parsonage.
