A SHAM ATTACK.
Per Press Association. Auckland, August 2?,
An attack upon Auckland forts, maimed by three companies of garrisou artillery, was made last night by a hostile cruiser attended by two torpedo destroyers, each endowed with a speed of 20 knots and a heavy armament. The enemy was supposed to have evaded British warships, and intended to enter port ttnder cover of the darkness to destroy tho Calliope Dock in bright moonlight. Tho enemy's largo ships, represented by the defence steamer Lady Koberts, and two pinnaces from H.M.S. Encounter, were discovered from tho forts, and were presumably repelled with terrific damage. The enemy's cutter landed at Bastion Fort, seized a sentry, and cut off telephone communication, but the defenders assert that site ap2)roache.rl from the -town side, and should have from seaward.
