AN INTERESTING SITUATION.

Mr Carruthers states that ho insti noted the police to remove a quantity of wire netting from one of the wharves in defiance of tho Commonwealth customs. He has done so as it was within the rights of the State under the Federal constitution to import goods free of duty. The action of Mr Carruthers creates an interesting situation with the Federal authorities. Melbourne, August 21. Sir TV". Lyne informed the Bouse that he had received intelligence from Sydney that, Mr Carruthers had sent a force of police to one of the wharves who had removed a quantity of wive netting ordered by the State Government in defiance of tho customs officers. One member said that Mr Carruthers would have been arrested if Giovenment had done its duty. Sir W, Lyno replied that ho wanted to act judiciously but thought Government must proceed further. He had given orders for shipments of wire netting to be placed under lock and kev.
