Per Press Association. * Dunedin, August 10. The criminal sittings of the Supremo Court commenced this morning before Justice Williams. A Lad named Douglas McDonald Morris was ordered to come up for sentence when called on tor breaking and entering ; Frances Nolan received twelve mouths’ for stealing from the person ; Robert Thomson was ordered to come up for sentence when called Carl Jacobson was sentenced to nine months’, and Daniel Callaghan to twelve mouths’ imprisonment for broaching cargo ; in the ease of James If right Campbell, 37 years of age, against whom there were several charges of theft, etc., sentence was suspended to enable his Honor to consider what was best to bo done; a charge of inflicting griovious bodily harm against James Russell was under consideration when the Court rose. Other charges on the list pro arson against Thomas Millar and theft against John McMillan.
Auckland, August 19. Before the Supremo Court Charles William Utthig, a young man, petitioned for a dissolution of marriage with Lilly Nutting, on the grounds of her adultery, a Chinaman named Willie Wall being co-iospondont. There was no appearance of respondent or co-respondent. Charles Tatting said he was married on March 30/ 1001, and-about a year later he found his wife bad misconducted himself. Ho condoned the offence and took her back, but sufascoueutly learned that his wife was living at Hamilton and in Auckland with co-respondent. Evidence supported these allegations. Justice Deuniston ordered a decree nisi, with costs against corespondent. Weli.ington, August 19. At the Supremo Court to-day, Joseph Norman, in whoso case the jury disagreed last Friday, was convicted of an unnatural offence and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. William Jewett Hirst, who was convicted of perjury last week, was sentenced to nine mouths. Charles Dunn and Frank Morrow wore charged with wounding one Grenberg with intent do bodily harm. Dunn was found not guilty, and Morrow was found guilty of common assault and remanded till the morning for sentence. At tho civil sittings of the Supreme Court to-day Michael Bee Demuth, clerk, of Wellington, claimed -IMOO damages from St. George A. Dowsing, clerk in the Land and Income Tax Department, Wellington, for libel and slander. It was asserted that last December defendant told one William Lingard that his (defendant’s) daughter, aged 18, had been taken from the custody of her parents and induced by plaintiff to enter into a clandestine correspondence and otherwise rebel against the authority,of her parents. Defendant asked that plaintiff be dismissed from the employ of Messrs Lingard and Co. Defendant also wrote to Messrs Lingard and Co. saying that ho intended taking criminal proceedings against plaintiff. The Court awarded .£SO damages with costs on the lowest scale.
