THE BUCENTAUR INQUIRY.
Per Press Association. Auckland, August 20. Nows from Fiji by the Mauapouri reports that the steamer Bucoutaur wont ashore on the main reef on the eastern side of the passage when leaving Suva at 10 p.m. on August 13th. After the steamer was floated her forehold contained 17ft. of water. A diver found two damaged plates, one of which lie could put his baud through. Repairs were effected and the pumps were set to work. Some 1100 sacks of oats were jettisoned. The balance of the cargo was mostly canned goods. The cargo was consigned as follows : For Auckland, 1124.3 packages merchandise ; fer Wellington, 16319 packages merchandise; for Lyttelton, 1213 packages merchandise; Dunedin, 3733 packages merchandise; Melbourne. 839,646 feet of timber.
The evidence by the officers at the official inquiry was to the effect that the helmsman turned the wheel the opposite way to ids order. The seaman admitted that lie turned the ■\eessel to port, but he stated that the captain gave the order to port the helm.
