DENOMINATIONAL BENEVOLENT SCHOOLS.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, August IS.
At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board to-day the question of contributions to private benevolent institutions or schools was considered. The Anglican denomination made application for a contribution towards St. Mary’s Orphanage, and one of the members of the Board claimed some consideration for the Presbyterians’ Orphanage. In support of applications members of the Board generally considered these benevolent institutions were as much entitled to assistance as St. Vincent Be Paul’s, Dunedin, and the denominational institution at Nelson.
The Board’s solicitors advised that assistance could only ho given to gazetted institutions which are recognised as industrial schools. The Board, however, could take over tho Orphanage under Section 31 of tho Act. It was resolved that tho Board recommend Government to place St. Mary’s Orphanage on tho list of schools receiving grants. This recommendation to apply to all denominational schools doing work of an equally benevolent character.
The Board also decided to state a case for the decision of the Supremo Court as to whether tho Benevolent Trustees or the District Charitable Aid Board have control of the distribution of charitable aid in the district.
