ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

What, appears to be a case of suicide occurred this morning in Merlin BoardiuvVniso in Hobson-streot. A remittance man named John Cockburn Owen Bassett, about 10 years of age, was discovered dead in bed and standing on a table beside him was a glass tho contents of which are supposed to bo a mixture containing cyanide of potassium. A bottle containing a quantity of the same ’mixture was also in the room, while on tho floor was a "wrapper with tho name of the poison upon it. Bassett was last seen alive between two and throe o’clock yesterday afternoon when ho was going into his bedroom. GniiYsrouTH, August 1(5.

When returning from the State collieries last night a drag containing tho “Kelly Gang” Biograph. Company capsized at Batty’s Hill and tho driver, George Osbourne, was killed. Tho other occupants escaped uninjured. Wellington, August IG.

Tho Marino Department lias received a report of tho narrow escape from drowning of tho captain, second mate, and three seamen of the barque Pclotas in Guards Bay on Wednesday last. Tho vessel, winch is hound from Clarence River to Wellington, put into Guards Bay on Monday for shelter. On Wednesday Captain Cozens and the sccqncl mate and three sailors put off for the shore in a lifeboat to_ obtain provisions. A squall capsized the boat, but all the men managed to scramble on to tho bottom and remained there until she drifted ashore at Forsyth Island. Tho party stayed on tho rocks all night, and on the following day were taken back to the vessel. The captain was much knocked about, and one man was laid up. Medical assistance and food have been sent from Pictou.
