SCULLING.
Tressider Wants the Championship, It is reported (says the fydn’ey Mail of a recent date) that Richard Tressider, who recently defeated B. Thoroughgood after what appeared a, very hard race, has issued a challenge to row the winner oi the TownsWebb race for the title now held by the former. It is sta'ecl on good authority that Tressider has deposited £25 with a Newcastle resident who is well-known in sporting circles, and that he proposes to race the winner of the forthcoming race for £250 aside and the world’s sculling championship. Under the conditions which now govern the holding and challenging for the title, Tressider is quite within his rights in challenging Towns by depositing £25. But he cannot name the amount of stakes. One of the conditions is )that the stakes shall not be less than £2OO a> side when two scullers, of the same plat e or country row, and not less than £SOO e-side when it is an international event. If Webb should win, the deposit for a match must be £IOO, and the stakes not less than £IOOO in all. So putting aside all other considerations, Tressider’d challenge is not such as Webb cip accept. To be sure of Iris claims.s would bo necessary for the new challenger to issue two challenges in duo form—one to O. Towns for the championship in actordanee with the printed conditions, accompanied by a deposit of £25, the holder of this money to inform the person chah lenged of the nature of the challenge. On receipt of this Towns would have to accept within three months. If he wins the race against Webb h$ would still have about two months to run, and, of course, Tressider would need to leave his deposit at stake until that time had expired. The second challenge would have to be addressed to Webb, and a deposit made of £IOO, as that match would be of an international character. Webb would have the right to make the reply any time before three months had expired. He would also have the right to name the course—over three miles, but not more than four and a quarter miles. And Tressider has this in his favour. As soon as the race was ended he could withdraw the challenge ha did not not wish to go on with, and notify the person holding his money. It would be this Way-Town wins, Tressidsr’s challenge is the first in, aud ho withdraws that issued against Webb. On the other band —Webb vins, Tressidar has the first call, and draws the deposit put in lor the Towns challenge. Thera is no other way of doing this in proper order. But why should Tressider rush ih’ngs as he is doing ? The winner, whoever ha may bo, is bound to race him. Is it that be fears some other claimant may take his place ? The only possible opposition could come from E. Bairy. R, Arnst, E. Daman, J. Wray, or B. Thoroughgood. Not any of those will bo ready cq or before August (frd, However, this urgent challenge shows now healthy is iho rivalry for the championship/
