FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held last night, the Mayor (Mr J. B Trewin) in the chair. Correspondence was dealt with as foL lows : From Isaac Brent, asking to be allowed to build a shed in wood at rear of his workshop.—Held over until report of Brick Area Committee has been given. From Messrs Fitzhethert and Mclntyre, for J. B. Gilberd and Sons, purchasers of lease near abattoir, asking for right of renewal in view of their intention to put down plant for boiling down works.— Referred to Abattoir Committee with power to give extension of lease for five years.
From M. Simpson, asking when Council proposed to take over York-street.—To be taken over when properly connected with Denbigh and Derby-streets. From Prior and Gillespie, asking Council to do necessary work on MacArthurstreet and charge land owners fronting the street with cost,—Held oyer till next meeting. From E. P. Smith and others, request; ing that lamp pos t be placed at junction of South and Warwick-streets.—Cannot be done, as gas main is not laid to that point. From Sanitiry Inspector, reporting that a case of scarlet fever and one of diphtheria had occurred in the town during July. In the latter case the premises wore insanitary. The patient died.
From Abattoir Inspector, reporting that 139 cattle, 38S sheep, 2 lambs, and 87 pigs had been slaughtered. Four cattle had been Condemned. ' The fees amounted to ISB3 4s 6c}. The Engineer reported that a considerable quantity of sewage- was constantly being discharged at the storm overflow of the septic tank, caused by the silting up of the gravel in the filter chamber at the end of the tank. Ho considered the work of carrying the water pipe from the abattoir to the septic tank should be proceeded with.
He pointed out tliat the manholes bf the sewage drains should be raised to the road' level, 'ah many of them were dangerous to traffic and also allowed a large quantity of storm water to enter the sewage pipes. It had been reported tp. hha that a portion of No. 1 intake tunnel had fallen in over a distance of 20 feet. He advised that plans of proposed buildings in the Borough should be rnore complete at The present records were utterly valueless for reference. A deputation of the master butchers of Feilding waiting on Council and requested that the abattoir charges be reduced. Or. Bramwell said the whole question hinged on whether it was desirable to erect a cool store.
The question of charges and of epol store was referred to the Abattoir' Committee and in the teeaU time ‘the master butchers were' ‘requested' to give their opinion as to the erection of a cool store. It was stated by Cr. Oobbe that Mrs Sherwill was willing to sell 7J feet of her land for widening the connection of. Mao-Arthur-street with Manchester Square. The Engineer’s report was accented with the exception of the last clause T?ith refer, ence to budding plans which was referred to the'Works Committee. ' E. N. Blundell’s tender at 25s a cord for mntai firewood was accepted, C. J. B. Skinner was appointed ranger and pound keeper. • It was resolved that in future the cost of all kerbing for private property be found by the owner.
