OBITUARY.
Press Association. Invercargill, August 1. Mr John Hay, Southland Commissioner of Crown Lands, died 10-night. He had been commissioner for six years and had previously done a vast amount of survey work in Southland. The first illness that ever laid him up was an attack of measles a few months ago. He got up too soon and pleurisy supervened. Jaundice complicated the case, but until a few days ago nobody doubted his recovery. Cancer of the liver was diagnosed and on Monday Mr Hay sank fast till death ended his pain at 7 to-night. Deceased who was truly respected by Ml who had to do with him, was born on the 9th May, 1818, and joined the service on the sth May, 1807. He was appointed chief surveyor for Otago about 1897 and followed Mr Barron here.
