ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(Press Association.) Auckland, August I. A lad named Cedric Purcell, aged 16[ was admitted to the hospital this morning suffering from a broken collar bone. Purcell, who was working at the Waitemata Sawmill, near the railway wharf, was struck by a falling plank. Yesterday afternoon Miss Muir,, a weiUkuown resident of Maugere, yyas driving to her home from Onehuftga in a buggy, and when on the stone approach to the. Maugere side her horse shied at an approaching milk van aud swerved, the hub of one wheel catching one of the posts of the- side rail. The buggy immediately overturned, aud the horse bolted. Miss Muir was accompanied by a boy, and both wore dragged some distance I before they could extricate themselyes. Miss Muir repipvgd severe injuries 1 t,o [her right fooj-,' 'ljer' companion escaping with a shaking. The road was yery muddy, aud added much to the discomfort of tiie unfortunate victims. Shortly before 10 o’clock this morning a man named Samuel Stevenson, employed by the contractors for putting an additional storey tp Sargood, Son aud Ewen’s warehouse, fell dp>vn the well of the lift ftse'4 by the Imildhfs hftd died-in a few minutes. His* skull was fractured and pup b|' Ids'arms broken', deceased' 'bpii, aged about 86. ’
Ashbueton. August 2. Another old identity ("passed away this morning iu the person of Mr Joseph Hunt, at the ripe age of 88. He came to the district in 1865, and Was one of flip first to put'down oats and wheat iu Ashburton, aiid lie cut quo of the first wafer races in Canterbury.
