Owing to the exclusion of several items the total proposals originally provided were reduced by £11,750. In the Senate a motion was carried iu'favour of voting machines at Parliamentary elections. Mr Keating anticipated that the adoption of penny postage would result in a loss of £IOO,OOO per annum, but judging from New Zealand’s experience the loss would be overtaken iu three or four years.
