AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.

Press Association. —Copyright. Melbourne, August 1.

In the House Mr Hughes moved that in order effectively to defend the Commonwealth against possible enemies it was imperative that all able-bodied males be trained to the use of arms and instructed in such military or naval drill as may be necessary for the purpose. Mr Hughes declared that Australians were living in a fools’ paradise, as the present system of defence was inadequate and ineffective. ■ He commended the Swiss system of defence. The debate was adjourned.
