The Ranfurly Shield. Press Association. Wanganui, July 18. The Wanganui Rugby Union to-night decided to challenge Auckland for the Eanfurly Shield.
Rangitikei Sub-Union. A mooting of the management was held at Marton last evening. Present Messrs S. J. Gibbons, chair ; Sand ford Oox, H. W. Saunders, J. Hathaway, F. Rhodes, Father Molloy and the Secretary. Mr J. A. Pawsou, manager of representative team, reported favourably on |the trip to Wanganui, and spoke in praiseworthy terms of the conduct of the men. They suffered defeat by a good margin of points, but with a full team should be able to make a good stand in the return match at Marton.
A vote of thanks was accorded Wanganui Union for hospitality extended to Rangitikei team and a hope was expressed that a return match will bo arranged at an early date.
It was reported that a representative team from Wanganui Thursday Clubs would visit Marton to play a Rangitikei team on a Thursday afternoon. It was decided that Thursday, August Ist, be fixed for this match. A committee consisting of Father Molloy, S. J. Gibbous and J. A. Pawsou were appointed to wait on the Mayor to arrange for halt-holiday on this date instead of Wednesday. The Secretary of Marton Club wrote again asking for another round to bo played in the Junior Cup.—-It was the opinion of the meeting that another round would have been better for football and created added interest in the cup contest, but as two rounds was the original decision of the Union, the committee felt it must be adhered to. Rata had practically won the cup and it would be unfair to them to decide on another round. —Resolved, Mr S. Cox—Father Molloy, that the committee cannot consider the matter unless a unanimous request is received from the three competing clubs. , It was decided that the boundary lino between tire sub-unions viz: The cross road near the metal pit on the Taihape side of Ohingaiti he ’adopted. The Secretary of Bulls Club wrote inquiring if two Rata players were eligible to play in the last Junior Cup match at Rata. The question at issue was whether these players had been granted a clearance from Rata Club, as recommended by the Union, prior to this match. —The secretary of Rata Club wrote enlisting those men as playing members as from 14th July, but it was pointed out that the names had been received on the first list sent to the Union, — Mr Saunders said the secretary of Bulls Club was perfectly justified in asking these questions as at the last meeting of the committee of the Union the Rata Club was directed to grant a clearance to one of the players in question. He understood this had not been done as the player had since withdrawn his request. He felt that tho secretary of Rata Club should be reprimanded for the delay in intimating this case to the Union. The Union secretary should have been notified. —It was resolved that the secretary of Rata Club he written to asking tho circumstances under which 1 Rata Club claims the reiustatement"of the two players-*— Hartley and M. Downes.
The date i’or the Rata-Hunterville school match was left with Mr Saunders to arrange. In connection with the next senior match a request from each team was received. The Hunterville Oluh asked for the match to he played on a Wednesday instead of Saturday and Bulls wanted the game to he played on any other ground hqt Hunterville on account of its wet state.—Resolved, that the match he played at Hunterville on Saturday, July 37th, and that Mr G. E. Gibbons he appointed referee.
The date for the final for the Third Class Cup at Martou was fixed for Wednesday, August 7th. Father Molloy was appointed referee. A protest was received from Bulls juniors against the decision of the referee in the Rata-Bulls match at Rata. A • statement was received from the referee that a mistake had been made but the committee could not entertain the protest as Rule 15 of the by-laws had not been complied with. The Bulls Club wrote enlisting A. McLean and S. Hunt as playing members. —The former was accepted but it was not known whether S. Hunt was eligible to play and the matter was adjourned pending enquiries being made from secretary of Martou Club.. It was decided to suggest Wednesday, August 14th, for a representative match against Awarua at Taihape.
