In the House of Commons Ulster Unionists made vigorous efforts in the committee stage of the Evicted Tenants BIT to limit the benefits of the Bill to 2000 tenants and to prevent the compulsory acquisition of more than 80,000 acres.

Mr Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, refused to limit the powers of the Commissioners.
