The Governor’s speech showed that the State indebtedness had been reduced during the year by £1,014,000. Arrangements had been made to meet the local loan of a million falling due in October and nearly the whole of the London loan of two millions duo in April next had been provided for. A policy of judicious railway construction would be recommended. Bills to provide for the acquisition of a million acres for closer settlement would be submitted. Power would be obtained to institute indeterminate sentences. A referendum would bo taken on scripture lessons in State schools. Old ago pensions would be increased from 8a to 10s per week. A Workmen’s Compensation Bill would be introduced.
Melbourne, July 11
Notices of motion have been given in tho Senate and the House in favour of State-owned mail steamers. The leader of the Labour party has introduced a Bill abolishing distress for rent and securing proper provision for families of well-to-do testators.
Adelaide, July 11
A private Bill has been introduced to abolish barmaids, and give those at present following the occupation ten years’ tenure ; also to prohibit all women, except! widows of licensees, from holding a license.
