SUICIDE.
Strangled in a Police Cell. Press Association.. Dunedin, July 6. Gabriel McOambridgel strangled himself ina a police cell last night. Ho was arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of being drunk and disorderly and taken to the watchhouse, where, on account of his violent behaviour, and peculiar appearance, ho was confined iu a padded cell. McCambridge was visited iu the course of the usual routine at 9 and at 9.30, and at that time appeared to he well, but on opening tho cell at 10.10 one of tho sergeants and the watch-house keeper found the man lying face downwards on the floor. Examination proved that he had torn a strip somo inches wide off one of his blankets, and, making a running noose iu one eiid, placing the loop around his neck, lie pulled the other end until ho 'strangled himself. Deceased was aged 39, and is believed to be married, with a family. Some 18 mouths ago he was licensee of a well-known hotel at Naseby, and subsequently tenanted Brighton Hotel, but latterly has been employed as a porter iu Dunedin Hospital.
