Sir John Forrest said in the statement of Federal finances that the revenue for the year was ,£12,832,000, which was £905,000 in excess of the estimate and £952,000 above the previous year,. The expenditure was £4,980,000, which was £34,000 bolow tho estimate. Customs and excise contributed to the Federal revenue £9,649,000, an increase of £649,000 s Post Office £3,117,600. an increase of £303,000. Tho amounts returned to the States totalled £7,040,000, New South Wales receiving £3,022,000; Victoria £2,192,192, Queensland £942,000, South Australia £645.000, Western Australia £780,000, Tasmania £262,000, all being considerably above the estimates.
