As the result of a conference agreement has been reached in the timber trade dispute subject to the approval of a referendum of workers. The timber merchants have given the workers’ unions the right to take over within three months one or more miles which are to bo worked on the cooperative system. Melbourne, June 22.
The Minister of Agriculture cannot understand the clamour about Victoria’s action over the Singapore line of steamers. When tenders were called Burns, Philp and Co. asked a subsidy twice that was being paid. Victoria would never have thought of a subsidy if she could have got equal terms with Sydney and Adelaide, Affairs in connection with the mail contract remain in abeyance pending Mr Deakin’s arrival. It is reported that Mr Deakin brings with him a draft of an agreement with the White Star line to carry mails to Australia. Sydney, June 21. The Labour Bureau repons that industrial matters generally are satisfactory, and that while local labour in most districts is sufficient, there is an entire absence of unemployed. *
