Racing at Hawke’s Bay. First Day. By “ Turf.” Despite the unfavourable wotithor the iibovo Club were favoured with a good attendance oiu the opening day. Racing started with the Whakatu Hack Hurdles for which Matakokiri and Top Rose were greatly fancied. Floka was first to show in front, and led to the fence in front of the stand, with Top Rose, and Arahura in close attendance. Going out of the, straigl.it, Top Rose was in command, and Fleka began to fall back, At the live furlong post, the favourite, Matakokiri, was in front, and, easily maintaining his ad vantage for the remainder of tho distance, won hands down by seven or eight long tbs. Tho public were again fortunate in picking the whiner of the Winter Hack, Reservoir being a staunch favourite. Hiuupai, Robin Link and Reservoir got away in that order, and the first named led for most of tho distance. At the turn for home Reservoir came up fast, and when tho, distance had been readied had assumed the lead. A good race to the post resulted in favour of Reservoir by a length., and Taugaroa, with a smart run, managed to beat Hiuupai' for second place by about the same distance. Hipporofla, 307, was steadily supported till tho bell rang for the .Indies’ Bracelet, and getting well away led to the five furlong post, when ho gave way to Iceland and Makn. Rounding the bond into (bo straight Maku was in the lead, with Iceland and Hipporofla.close handy. On tho run for homo First Foot came with a groat rush, and after a capital finish secured tho verdict by a bare head, about a couple of lengths separating second and third. First Foot is by Robinson Crusoe— First Flash and was ridden by Mr O. H. Hammond. In the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase Irish was selected, as a probable winner, Eclair being the uext t in demand. Irish got the best of a fair start, but soon gave place to Daredevil and Hikairoa. At the railway bond Hikairoa and Nadador wore in front, while Irish immediately afterwards came down at the double. Passing the stand the first time the order was Nadador, Hikairoa, Eclair, Hntaua and Comfort, tho others tailing off. Practically no change took place in the relative positions of the leaders during the second round, but Lo Yeut came fo grief at the second obstacle that bad proved disastrous to Irish, and at'the mext hurdle a similar fate befell Comfort. At the hack on tho last round Nadador was in the lead, with Hikairoa, Eclair and Hntaua . .close up. Eclair came away at tho railway bend, and Hu tan a subsequently moved up into second place. Eclair speedily established a comfortable lead, and eventually wen by about four lengths, Hutnua beating Nadador for second money by a length and a half. ■■■■.;■ Only four went to tlie post for the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles Pushful, 201, boiiig favorite. Tho field were sent away on oven terms and kept well together during the first mile, tho order then being Aqua Regia, Prospector, Pushful, To Oira and Cronsot. At the back Te Uira luid fallen away and Prospector was in the van, his nearest attendant being Pushful. Soon afterwards Pushful
MWaaßwwia«i^ wont to the front and vr ns not after* wards troubled, winning easily by several lengths. Creusot made a determined effort air tlio finish to got into second place, but did not quite BUCCGGtI. The largest field of the day faced tho starter in tho Scurry' Hack, Martyritun (488) being solidly supported Whilst Green loaf (Sou’wester —Lorelei) was next in demand. ■ Green leaf shot out from a Hither straggling . start, led all the way and won by a couple of lengths. Speculation was brisk- ou the last race, and when the flow up tho into figures showed 310 Havcot by 358 Moloch, 118 Pantaloon, 3-18 Intelligence and 233 Lyrist. 'Narcotic jumped away- at the fall (if the tingled all the way, and, easily staving off a challenge by Moloch in rim straight, won by three lengths, Moloch just beating Pantaloon torsecond place.
