MARTON BOWLING CLUB.
A large number of people accepted tho invitation of Martou Bowling Club to a social in St. Andrew’s Hall .last evening, the building being packed. Mr J. McEldowuey, president, extended a hearty welcome on behalf of the club. In his remarks he referred with pride to the fact that, notwithstanding the short time the club has been in existence their balance slieet and membership roll showed a record for any bowling cinb in the colony. This was largely due to the spontaneous liberality of the townspeople, and he particularly referred to tho good work done for the club by Messrs Teuuent Bros. Air McEldowuey feelingly spoke of the deep loSs the club had sustained in the death of their late President, Mr S. Gibbous, who had been one of the promoters of Marton Bowling Club and one of its most enthusiastic supporters. A very choice concert programme was submitted. A large orchestra, under the cqjidnctorship of Mr A. F. Sharpe, contributed selections in finished stylo, “Tho Turkish Patrol’’ being a particularly flue number. Other items contributed were :—Song, “The Mighty Deep,’’ Air Miuifie; song, “ In Old Alaclrid,” Mr W. L. Little; song, “The Trumpeter,” Mr A. Hunt; recitation, encored, Air Ehbott; mandolin solo, Air W. Peacock; song, encored, Air Sheriff; Air Jas. Pawson related an amusing episode, “How I went to a Birthday Party” ; Air A. H. Sutcliffe sang a comic song, playing his own accmpauimeut; and Air Harry Sutcliffe scored heavily m his whistling solo. He, also played his own accompaniment. Air Swinburne sang, “The Yeoman’s Wedding.” The accompaniments were played by Messrs Bert Orozier and S." Gibbons. Trophies won during the past season were then presented: Air Harry Sutcliffe won the bowls presented by Alcssrs Arch. Clark and Sous, having been top scorer for three years in succession and is thus the club’s champion. Air Jas. Pawson won the bowls presented by Air J. M. Nicol, and Mr H. H. Hunt those presented by the late Air S. Gibbons. Air AlcEldowuey was happy in bis oulogiums of the players who had won trophies, and particularly so in the case of Air Hunt to whom ho extended the club’s heartiest wishes for every happiness aud prosperity in his wedded life. A liberal supply of refreshments wore then dispensed by members of tho club, Sharpe’s orchestra supplying excellent music mean-' while. After supper numerous parlour games were provided for tho guests, and the evening proved the most enjoyable yet held under the uspices of the club.
