Cancer accounted for 23 deaths in the four centres of New Zealand last month. During May 136 births, 80 marriages and 55,deaths were recorded in Wellington.

As the result o£ the enquiry into the recent mutiny of Wellington Submarine Mining Volunteers, charges have been preferred against a non-commissioned officer of instigating the meeting, supplying information to the press, etc. Yesterday Mr E. Brown suggested to the Oroua County Council that tho best manner to prevent the creek from cutting further into Midland road was to divert the creek on his land. Cr. Eowling was requested to arrange with Mr Brown for the deviation to be rnado.
At Feilding Court yesterday Apostolas Eaptropo, fishmonger, was charged with stabbing another fishmonger, Gambitis, on the arm. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was remanded to the 13th, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SO and himself £IOO.
ThegWellington correspondent of a contemporary intimates that shortly after Sir Joseph Ward's return notice will be sorved on tho Wellington Manawatu Railway Company of the • Government's intention to take oyer the company's line. Oroua County Council is of the opinion that a uniform valuation over a large area of country such as can be made by the Government Valuation Department, though somewhat more expensive than purely local valuations is more satisfactory.
At Christchurch Poultry Show, A. Montgomerie, Whakaronga, was most successful in Brown Leghorns, winning the cup and getting first and third for cockerels, first for hen, first for pullet, second for cock. The classes were said to be, tho best the judge has oyer seen.
An indignant ratepayer wrote to the Oroua County Council on Friday stating that tho roadman in his locality would persist in making water run up hill, with the result that the writer's land was flooded. Cr Vincent said this was a serious charge. The chairman was requested to see into the matter.

Eepresentations were made to the Council of the New South Wales Prohibition party, at its meeting last week, that a considerable trade was growing up in certain parts in Sydney on Sunday in methylated spirits. Chemists, it was stated on reliable authority, were selling large quantities of these spirits, and they were having a very bad effect upon consumers. It was urgent that legislation should bo sought for in tho matter.
!Mr Duncan Stout, third son of tho Chief Justice, ha 3 wou the Sands Cox ! prize in physiology at Guy's Hospital tenable for three years, at £ls per year. He also got a proficiency prize for the term. Mr Stout had 575 marks, A. W. Cox 871-, and W. Gardiner 860. They were declared equal, and the two prizes of £ls each divided. Mr Stout won last year an open science scholarship.
Consideration of the petition to Oroua County Council for tho erection of a light traffic bridge at Menzies' ford has been deferred 12 months. Tho heavy expenditure the Council has to meet in connection with the erection of tho Gorge Bridge within that period renders it impossible to undertake the proposed work. The much-abused mother-in-law was the subject of a mirthful break in the monotonous proceedings at the Supreme Court at Wanganui on Saturday. A witness, when asked if it was hot very different buying for his mother-in-law than his wife, replied, " That is so," and later on said he would not have bought some shares for his mother-in-law without consulting her in the mattor first, but with his wife it was different.
At Tiniaru E. C. Edwards, omployea for two and a half years as head miller by the Timaru Flour Milling Company at £5 per week, is now suing the company for payment for 1598 hours ovortimo put in during his engagement, amounting at time and a quarter rate under the Factories Act of £209 odd, or as an alterna tive to £236 odd under the millers' award, which gives somewhat higher rates. At Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday, tho Lovin Co-operative Dairy Co. and Horowhenua Co-operative Poultry Co. were fined 40s with costs £3 10s for failing to supply the Registrar of Companies with a list of members and a summary for the year as required by. law Hearing was resumed of tho charge against Chas. Dunn and Frank Morrah alias Jas. Morrah of wounding Gustav Grenburg. Defendants were, alleged to have grievously assaulted Grenburg during a squablo at a "two-up" school* After hearing further evidence for the prosecution the case was again adjourned]
The Masterton Magistrate has reserved judgment in a case in which Mary Dorrell, wife of a river overseer, sued W. H. Diddams, manager of tho Bank of New Zealand, Greytown, tor £2S 8s specific damages, and £2O general damages caused to plaintiff through the defendant running ovor her iu his motor car in Sej)tembor last. The defence was that there
was ample time for plaintiff to have got out of the way, becauso she . received every warning possible. Sbo became flurried, however, and turnod round and round, faltering and going first ono way and then another. Defendant considered that the accident was causod by no contributory negligence on his part.
Dr Mason, Chief Health Officer, who arrived at Napier on Thursday from the North, states that in his opinion there is no reason for alarm as to tho likelihood of anything like a plaguo epidomic, although, of course, occasional cases might occur. It was, howovor, most desirable that there should not bo any relaxation of precautions, rubbish should not be allowed to accumulate, and rats should be trapped and poisoned, as thore was no doubt tho rat was tho chief danger, and overy attempt should be made to get rid of him. The circumstances at Napier (says tho Tolograph) made it easy to keep tho town clean, but still people woro foolish and "over optimistic at times, and it was never idle to preach cleanliness. Dr Mason does not intend to visit Gieborno, as tho cultures taken in connection with tho recent suspicious death thoro have boon sent to Wellington, and ho will soo thorn thoro on his return. "

At Masterton a new use was suggested for the technical school in the case of an application by a carpenter to work at less than the minimum wage The application was opposed by the Union, but after hear- j ing the evidence of the applicant's • last employer the Magistrate granted , the permit for sis months provided ; that the man attended the Technical School. A proposal to erect a new technical school at Masterton to the memory of the late Mr Seddon is meeting with great success. The Borough Council lias voted £IOO towards the project, and as a result of one day's canvass over £4OO has been promised, including a donation of £35 from the Mayor and £l2 10s from the Mayoress. The Press Association agent at Ohristchurch provides the following item as of general interest:—" The first severe frost of the season was experienced this morning. The vegetation everywhere was covered deeply- with white rime and to-day is beautiful with bright sunshine." Returns have just been made up of the number of persons who have, through the High Commissioner's Department, received reduced ."rate passages for the twelve mouths ended March 31st, 1907. In that period 3712 person" left England for New Zealand with a stated capital of £103,967, and income of £1938. Among the number were 254 domestic servants. The number of "persons included in declined applicaations was 184 G, so that protically onethird of the aapplications were declined. Westport became excited last week over a walking match, man v. horse. The competitors were Mr A. Shavpe and Messrs Leuuio and Robinson's thoroughbred trotting ;horso Yellow Peril. The distance was five and a half miles, up the' Buller road, finishing at the Perry. The horse, the Westport Timos reports, walked the distanco in one hour five minutes, and won the novel event, beating Mr Sharpe with a bit to spare. As the result of the- roport. cf the Commission which inquired into the railway accident at Bankside on March 29th, when a volunteer train collided with a weekly special train from Christchnrch to Ashburton, the Minister' of Railwys has decided to dispense with the services of J. Meikle and H. O. Seaman, driver and guard respectively of the down train, a 3 from the- date of their suspension, March 29th. A Napier telegram says :—A very important sale o£ property was made to-day when Messrs C. B. Hoadley and Son sold to a syndicate Mr Beecroft's property of one aoro and a half in Hastings for £25,000, which is the highest price per acre over realised for land in Hawke's Eay. Now Zealand is going to open up trade with Gibraltar it seems. Mr Gr. B. Bullock, manager for the New Zealand Shipping Co. has received advice that the Kaiko.ura, which left Lyttelton for London on Tuesday night, is calling at tho big fortress to land a trial shipment of New Zealand meat. The results of this innovation will he awaited with interest.
At the inquest on F. K. Boyer, manager of Waihi Workers' Co-opor'ativo Society, who shot himself in four places on 25th May, and died on Thursday, tho evidence disclosed financial einbnrassroent of his society and consequent mental anxiety, culminating in self-destruction. A verdict that deceased met his death through bullet wounds, self-mfiieted, was returned. At Auckland Court, the PostmasterGeneral obtained judgment for 4s 5d and 5s costs against E. L. Lindsay, of Pembroke, for rent of a private letterbox for two and a-half months. Tho object in issuing tho summons is to call public attention to the fact fiat private letter-box rents must be paid promptly and without prolonged correspondence with tho Postal Department.
We regret to record the death of Mr George Flygor, which took place at Elthain on Thursday. Mr Flygor was "well known to the people of Bulls, where ho has followed the occupation of tailor for some years. He left us a few weeks ago to try a change of climate for the benefit of his health, which had not been good for some tinio, owing to lung troubles. He was a most patient sufferer, and was never heard to make any . complaint. His sudden cloath came as a shock to those to whom ho wa3 so well and favourably known. The great success of the social held in the Drill Hall, Marton, last evening under the auspices of Court Little John must have been very gratifying to those members of the committee who worked so hard to bring the affair to a successful issue. A largo number of dancers were presont, including several visitors from outsido lodgos. The floor was not as good as most would have liked, hut the music by Orozior's Orchestra was splendid. The Dresden Piano Co., kindly supplied the piano, which was a fine one. P.C.R.'s Bros. A. Way, J. G. Ritchie, and Bert Kitney acted as M.
