MANGAWEKA..
(From Our Own Correspondent.) meeting of parishioners of St. Margaret's Church.was held here last evening, report and balance-sheet was read, and showed a credit balance of £2 3s 7d. The following officers wore elected for the ensuing year : Vicar's Warden, Mr C. Adams; People's Warden, Mr G. Mills; Vestrymen, Messrs White, Haigh, JackBon, Bonltbee, Johnston and Campbell ; collectors, Mesdames Campbell and Stewart; and Miss E. Humphrey; auditor, Mr F. Stewart. Mr T. Leigh, the surfaceman, must be highly flattered by the goncral comment with regards to the clean state of the streets here. Although snow and rain has been falling intermittently during the pastweek, our streets will compare favourably with many of the larger centres with their army of roadmen. Z Settlers ingthis district have found it very hard to secure good bushinen this season. The large areas of bnsh coming down further north and back from the coast are no doubt responsible for the shortage here although good prices are being offered. Land is eagerly being sought after in these parts just now. On Thursday morning there were ten buyers from other parts having a look around for a piece of this fertile country, but up to the present I have only heard of a couple coming to t3rms. Land commission agents are having a busy time according to reports. , ~~, I am pleased to say the diphtheria, patient is almost convalescent, and it is to be hope that it will be a long time before another case of the kmd will be reported in Mangaweka. Some time ago it was reported that pstroleum had been found on a section about three miles from here, but as nothing has been heaid ol since of rich bores and up to date machinery we must surmise it inusS have been found in a kerosene ■"About five weeks ago I reported the advent of a Celestial fruit vendor m our midst, but to-day this Yellow peril had to put up his shutters and shift to where the public will support him. Mangaweka can boast of five Chinamen who have endeavored to get a footing here, and can also boast of starving five Chinamen out of the town. The people here will not tolerate the Asiatic, and quite right too.
