Stone?, June 7; The Methodist Conference discussed the proposals oi London VTesleyan Melhbdi3t Society for extension of the operations of the Methodist Missionary Society in Australasia to India, Doctor Brown moved the adoption of the recommendation of the- N.S.W Conference, that the mission to India be postponed for the present on the »grounds tna * ' ar 8 e mission work .has still to be done in tho islands of the Pacific, and the extra expenditure, pointing, out that the current expenditure for past three years exceeded income by nearly £2OOO. | Dr. Fitchett pointed out the smallness ■ of population'involved in the missions in j the Pacific' compared with India. The question was not only were they spending money on a good cause, but to the best effect. They were told to do the work at their doors, and measured by time India ! was nearer that son-c of tho Pacific Islands. He moved iu au.undnient providing that the Mission Board send one or more men to India to train for mission work and prepare for an Australasian mission, it being left to the Mission Board, on information collected, to at once organise a permanent" Australasian mission to India, or maintain a preparatory mission till next general conference. Dr. Ktchett's amendment was carried by a large majority. June 8. Enthusiasm ran high at the missionary meeting in connection with the Methodist Conference, and £2853 was collected, including the gift from an anonymous donor of £IOO a year for five yoars.
