TAIHAPE.
(From Our Own Oorrespoftdeiit.) The North Island Main Trunk line has progressed another six miles, the line to Mataroa having been officially opened on Saturday June Ist. A good number of passengers loft Taihape bv the midday train, which was met by a large number of the residents and settlers for miles around. It being a beautiful day tempted quite a number from as far back as the Eangiwea and Koeka districts, whilst "the Te Eapua and Pohonui were well represented. Mr Monro called on the member for the district to address the assemblage which he did, giving -an outline of She history and cost up'to-date ot die Main Trunk line. He explained he absence of the Minister for Pubic Works and congratulated the people on the opening of the line to Mataroa. Mr A. Nathan, Mayor of Taihape, also iriade a few congratulatory remarks on the progress of the district. Mr F. A Bennett, chair--man of the Taihape Chamber of (iommerco, also spoke. Mr A. Eraser, Inspector of Public Works, replied on behalf of his department. After the speeches the ladies of Mataroa served afternoon tea to the visitors, a kindness which was greatly appreciated by all. We extend our hearty congratulations to our Mataroa neighbours and trust that as a district we may always be neighbours in the truest sense of the word, recognising always that our interests are identical in the progress of the district. We believe that the line will be further opened to Turangarere in the course of a month. The sale of Turangarere sections takes place this week and we are told that the sale is exciting a large amount of interest. The sitting of the Assessment Court was held on Friday last, before Mr A. Thomson, S.M., MiArthur James was for the Govern-ment-and Mr J. P. Aldridge for the borough, but all the business had been arranged and all were satisfied. - The first cup match between Taoroa's and Huias was played on the Taihape Oval on Saturday and resulted in a win for the Huias by 11 points to nil. The match was very evenly contested. The Taoroas in the scrum were superior to their opponents, but in the open play the Huais showed their superiority. \\ e certainly think however that the game should have been a drawn one, had it not been for the mistakes oi the full back of the Taoroas, who left the field before the end of the match. The defence of the whole forward division was really good, but despite their defeat on Saturday by the end of the fixtures the Taoroas will have more than a "hook" in at the finish. The Huias have a good team, but not in my opinion nearly as good as in former years. The Taihape juniors, or part of them, iourneyed to Moawhango on Saturday to play the Huia juniors* and as was to be expected, met with defeat, the home team winning by 12 to nil. The Taihapo boys played with 10 men and quite a scratch team at that, but those that went have at least nothing to be ashamed of.
