Canterbury J.C. Per Press Association. CniiisTcnuKCii, May 30. At the annual meeting of Canterbury Jockey Club held this afternoon, tho balance-sheet showed that receipts for tho year had amounted to .£11,272 9s lOd, which included £10,832 Os Id race receipts and £13,381 4s lid totalisator account. The expenditure totalled £39,607 7s Gd, which included £25,330 stakes paid, and £2891 14s lid totalisator tax. On the general working account the profit for the year was £5313 8s lid. The Chairman, Mr F. H. Pyne, in moving tht adoption of tho report and balancesheet, said tho future prosperity of tho Club largely depended on tho continuance of the totalisator, and he confidently believed that those pooplo who thought that uo law could abolish hotting would be in tho majority, and would not allow the totalisator to do clone away with. He wished to say nothing against respectable bookmakers, but surely tho totalisator was the healthiest and best form of betting, without which the Club could give nothing like the same valuable stakes which they wore enabled to give. Many people in New Zealand who had not been to the Old Country, where tho totalisator was not in existence, had no idea of the vast extent that betting attained amongst all classes of the community, and he know that in nearly every country village sums of money from 6d upwards were collected every day and sent to London or some other large centre for investment on the day’s races.
