LABOUR ON THE RAND.

Goorgo Alim, one of the loadovs of the German group of the ■ Rand mines, addressing the General Mining and Finance, Corporation at Johannesburg, declared that the mine owners were prepared for a prolonged struggle in settling the disputes for all had long realised that a large proportion of the miners were grossly inefficient, and munber employed underground was excessive. They -were reluctant to discharge men in had times, but the strike removed the sentimental factor and afforded an opportuity for far-readi--idg reforms. Ho predicted that the meins in future would bo run with 15 to 20 per cent fewer highly paid labourers. If the struggle was prolonged Africanders would fill the strikers’ places as supervisors of natives. The Witwaters-Eaud branch ot Hetvolk has refused to amalgamate with the Labour Party, objecting to its socialistic tendencies.
