TWO-UP SCHOOL.

Per Press Association. Wellington, May 27. At the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, there was a sequel to last week’s raid on an alleged two-up, school in the city, one, Sydney Macnamara, being charged with having kept premises at Abel Smith Street as a common gaming school. Allan Vernoy, aged 20, employed as a clerk at the telephone exchange, said that on the evening of the Bth, he went to defendant's premises. About seventy men were there playing two-up. The game was in progress when witness left at 1.30 in the morning. The player were seated round a ring. Every half hour a shilling was collected from witness by Macnamara, .Witness had been at the place fifteen or twenty times within a period of three months. The game was sometimes played in the afternoon, and defendant acted as ring keeper. Cross-examined: Witness said he was not on the premises when the raid was made. He had previously made a statement to a detective. This detective had said that if witness made a statement his name would not be used in the matter. Counsel; “Then you thought you could give some one else away without being found out, and that you would also save your position ?” Witness : “ Yes.” Counsel: “ You had refused until he tpld you that ?” Witness : “ Yes.” Peter Terence Kinsclla, a carpenter, gave evidence that he had seen two-up played on the premises, but did not see the defendant. George Williams, a baker’s driver, said he had seen two-up played in the room, but did not notice Maonamard. Evidence was given by the police concernin'.; the state of the room, and the manner in which the entrance was arranged. Defendant reserved his defence, and yas committed to the Supreme Court for trial. On a charge of being found without lawful excuse in a room .kept as a common gaming house, sixty-five men arrested in the raid last week were to-night fined £3 each and costs.
