ASCENT OF NGARUHOE.

Per Press Association. , W Ellington, May IS. The Tourist Department 'has received a telegram that Messrs McDonald and Cowan ascended Ngaruhoe on Wednesday that being the first occasion on which the mountain has boon ascended in winter. Tho ascent was most difficult, snow being encountered from the base to tho summit. A great volume of sulphurous steam was met with and occasionally tho atmosphere was so objects ouly"a few feet distant were obscured. They found evidences of a great blow out or series of explosions, aud fcbat tlio crater, which is now exhibiting great activity, has considerably changed since their previous visits. The telegram adds that tho proposed ascent of Ruapehu has boon abandoned.
