SUPREME COURT.

Press Association. ’Wellington, May 14. The jury to-night returned a verdict of not guilty in tho case of Charles and Emily Higgison, charged with causing the death of their infant child through neglect. May 15. At the Supreme Court Charles Vincent was charged with indecently assaulting a hoy. Ho was found guilty and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and ordered to reciev 20 lashes. | Gisborne, May 14.

Joe Riley for stealing a cheque for £7 was sentenced to 12 months. Jack Pernss for forgery and uttering got 18 months. Peter Cleary pleaded guilty to theft of 13s. Probation was refused and he will be sentenced to-morrow. Chkistchukch, May 14. P. Andrew Edward Ward convicted the previous day on indictment for theft was found guilty on a second indictment of obtaining £2O by false pretences. A sentence was imposed of nine months’ imprisonment on each charge, terms to be concurrent. In the case of- Alexander Hamilton charged with indecent assault at Southbridge, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Jas. Hitohings pleaded not guilty to assaulting a female. After the Judge had summed up Mr Stringer, Crown Prosecutor, said it might assist the jury if he stated on behalf of the Crown that it would not bo satisfactory to convict on the evidence. A verdict of not guilty was immediately returned.

Chhistchukch, May 15,

At the Supreme Court to-day the case is being heard against Smithers, alias Heher, charged with attempting to murder Nellie Jackson in Moorhouso Avenue some weeks ago. The evidence was a repetition of that given in the lower court. Michael Wall, found guilty of stabbing a man with a knife, was recommended for probation and sentence deferred.
