ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
Per Press Association.. Curistchuecu, May 9. An inquest was held to-night on Henry A. C. Ferguson, of Halswell, who died last night from injuries received in a collision between his dray and a traction engine. Evidence was given that the encine was drawn up close to the fence and out of the path of traffic and lights were shown both fore and aft. Deceased and his groom, who was with him in the trap, visited the Halswell Hotel shortly before the accident, but the licensee refused to serve them for the reason that they were under the influence of liquor. The inquest was adjourned so that the evidence of the groom might ho procured. New Plymouth, May 10,
A young man named Percy Allen had his foot badly crushed between the steamer and the wharf at Moturoa this morning while trying to reach a dog which had fallen in the watqjr. Hokitika, May 10. Tho body of an elderly man named Robert Sweeney, a miner, in the Woodstock district, was found floatigu in the Hokitika river this morning. Nothing is known as to the cause of the accident, which, it is believed, happened Jlast night. A young girl named Annie Brown, in "private employ, was severely burned last night by tho accidental explosion of benzine in an outhouse, where she appears to have gone for a small quantity, using n lighted match close to tho tap. A loud explosion was hoard, and when tho employers rushed out they found the shed full of flames and tho girl’s clothes on fire. She was carried out and tho flames smothered with blankets, but the girl was severely burned about tho faco, hands, and body, and Ivor condition'is critical, Tho tin containing tho benzine was blown to pieces us tho result of the explosion,
