REPORTS. The Overseer reported that Thompson and Fagan had completed their contract for supplying and delivery of metal in Samlon riding. Repairs had been effected to bridge on Kakariki road and culvert on Fagan’s line. The roadmen in this riding were making a start with Ohakea protective works. In reference to complaint of Messrs Young Bros., their work as they require it to be done would cost £5 to £6. Mr Hirst had not commenced his metalling contract on Cemetery road. Very little had been done in Waitohi and Eongotea ridings beyond breaking stones and trimming up roads, His estimate for construction of McLean’s road through Mr Johnstone’s property : 35 chains to bo raised 3ft. high, jiift widened on top, 154 yard.; to chain, was £1319 14s; for old road through Mr Stern’s and Mr Lenn’s, £1122 15s Od ; for bridge across Sluggish Creek, £238 ss. In Kwva Kftwa riding the Main Drain road would need to be put in order after tbs late Hood. Mr Simpson had completed metalling of road opposite Mr Duncan’s gate in a first-class manner. Mr Cordue had also completed his drain contract in Carnarvon riding in a satisfactory manner. Campion’s Lino had been badly cut up by carts carrying motal for Eongotea Town Foard, but he had had the road trimmed up with the road grader. He suggested that 15 chains of Whale Line be metalled. He had taken levels for a stop-bank near Shannon Ferry to protect new road deviation, and unless something was done to prevent Hood water coming over the road, ft would not bo possible to maintain a road at this point. The cost would be about £Bllos. Since the Hood it was impossible to get metal from Mr Nye’s pit, and he thought it advisabis to send metal to Foxton by tram.to repair Whirokino road. In regard to Mrs Whisker's complaint, ho had found by measurement that the fence claimed by her was 20 to 25 links on the road line. He reminded the Council of the intention to obtain bird poison this year earlier than usual, git was decided to obtain legal opinion in respect to Messrs Young Bros . claim, to carry metal on tram for Whirokino Bead, to obtain 5 bushels of poisoned grain, and to cancel Mr Hirst’s contract. It was resolved that contractor for Shannon Eoad deviation repair the new formation. The tramway manager reported traffic throughout month had been satisfactory, credit° balance being £24 Os 7s. As a result of advertising in the Advocate a special to Foxtou, to a performance of the Besses o’ th’ Barn Band £5 lOs Od had been taken in fares. The roof of the engine shed was in bad order. It >vas suggested it be re-roofed with fuheroid.—This suggestion was agreed to and it was explained to Cr McKenzie that permission to run the special had not been obtained until one day before the performance consequently a longer public notice could not bo given. The manager also reported that the engine driver and fireman had handed in overtime sheets for 46 and 48 hours respectively for last month. It would bo well for Council to como to some understanding as to amount of overtime chargeable. After some discussion it was resolved tliat Mr Mclntyre, sen., he given notice.
OTHER BUSINESS. It was decided to strike a general rate of Id in £ throughout the county, and separate rates as follows: —Sandon and lit. Stewart ridings Id, Waitolii 1-lCd, Carnarvon id, Eongotea Id, Kawakawa id in the £. That a sneoial meeting be hold on Wednesday," Juno 12th, to pass special order making special rate of Id in the £ in Whirokino division of Awahou riding. That the Chainnun and Cr pilasters affix the seal of County to a special order declaring pennyroyal and hemlock noxious weeds.
That Ranger be instructed to impound all stock found grazing on roads in ShUdon riding after 15th inst. That Mr Dick bo given one month extension of time on contract for erection of workman’s cotta ire.
The.. Treasurer reported as follows : —I have the honour to present for your consideration the estimates for the financial year ending 31st March, 1908. The esti mates have been based to allow of reduction of £3OO off overdraft, the same as was done last year. The overdraft is shown as being reduced from £722 Cs lid to £l2O 15s Id, equal to £295 5s lOd. Following is a statement of proposed rates for current year. You will notice that the general rate has been made a uniform one of Id in tho £, which is thought advisable in tho taco of legal opinions lately given against differential rates being struck over ridings. The estimated amount of subsidy for current year was £lllO, as against £1096 Gs Gd received last year. Receipts for tramway were estimated at £2IOO and tho expenditure at £2BOO, showing an apparent loss of £IOO. Tliis amount represents the cost- of improving tho grade, taking up aid relaying rails for second section on Carnarvon Lino.
Saadon Biding: Balance to credit oi this < riding was £l4 14s lOd, and the rate ’ struck last year was not sufficient to pay interest on loans. It is proposed to collect the same amount of rates as last year. Mount Stewart Biding: Amount of separate rate collected last year was not sufficient to pay interest on loans and therefore it will be necessary to increase the rate by 1-l Cd. Waitohi Biding; The financial position of this riding is satisfactory. The separate rate of 1-lCd proposed to be collected will not be sufficient to pay interest on leans, hut the Council can, by consent of the Auditor-General and by special order, transfer funds from general account to pay interest on riding loans up to the sum o£ £SO, and it this is done it will not be necessary to increase the separate rate. Eongotea Biding; The reducing o general rate of this riding to jd win necessitate “striking a separate rate of Jd, although this will mean that the total rate collectable will be reduced £25 as the Council cannot collect separate rates over the town district of Eongotea. The special rate of l-5d collected this riding last year was more than sufficient to pay * n ter est on loans, and it is proposed to reduce it to E-IGd. . , Carnarvon Biding ! The financial position of this riding is satisfactory, and the re dnetion of general rate from 7-8 d to |d will not necessitate separate rate being increased, so that the total rate in this riding can be reduced l-Bd. Kawa Kawa Biding: This riding has made a very heavy expenditure during the year and the amount of general rates struck last year was not sufficient to meet the dcminds. It is proposed to strike a special Wte of 3-Bd, making an increase of 3-10 d. Awabou Biding: No alteration is proposed in this riding. "" , a-1 J... Whirokino Division: The separate rate struck over this portion of Awabou Biffing last year was not sufficient for.
ttp-ltcsp of its roads and bridges. It is proposed to strike a special rate of |d, giving a further sum of £53 17s 3d for as follows! Reduction of overdraft £3OO, administration £430. Hospital and Charitable Aid £360, bridges and protective works £350, interest on overdraft £l4O, loans over the County (interest) £895, overseer and general expenses £3soj valuation £2875. Those charges would be apportioned among tbs several Ridings on the basis of valuation. The report was adopted.
