MANGAWEKA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) During tho past weok *or two this part of the district has been wel catered for in the shape of amusements. Dramatic companies, moving pictures, circus, buckjumping, local concerts and Italian street musicians have ail helped to squeeze a trifle out of those wild were holding a little spare cash ami now tho business people are wondering when their turn is coming. Miss Hamerton, pupil teacher of the local school, lias received word to proceed to Momohaki. On behalf of the pupils Eliza Peacock made a presentation of a handsome silverbacked toilet sot. Tie Anglican Church, of which Miss Hamerton was organist, presented her witli a massive oak cabinet, and her Sunday School pupils with a Morocco-bound Ancient and Modern Hymns with music. Whilst regretting gMiss Hamerton'-s departure from here, we are pleased to learn that her new appointment means promotion. A fire destroyed a four-roomed cottage owned by Mr J. A. McDonald on Thursday.' It appears Mrs Deucy, had the day previous, moved her furniture, etc, into thojhouse, but did not intend to live there until the following week. Mrs Deucy is a heavy loser, as her furniture carried no insurance. The cottage had a risk of £SO.
Mr Kraiger, the courteous and obliging mailman, who carries tho mail through the Kawliatau, has mot with the usual winter obstacles. Last trip he had to sit on his horse aud watch the roaring waters of tho Poungaki for "a £while and then return. It is time those in charge of that locality erected a bridge, otherwise some plucky adventurer will lose his lifo in trying to cross this swift stream when in flood.
