THE SYDNEY STRIKE.
Press Association.—Copyright. Sydney, April 26. The coal lumpers’ ultimatum, that they would not take any part in the conference .with a view to settlement of the strike unless an unpopular stevedores’ foreman was dismissed, had no effect on tho attitude of employers, who express their determination to stand firm. They declare that labour obtained through the bureau in conjunction with ships’ crews is sufficient for requirements. Delegates from the Seamen’s Union conferred with the Employers’ Association in reference to the situation. The result was not disclosed but it is reported that the local unions, which have been approached by the strikers show little sympathy with extension of the difflculty. The strikers relax none of their vigilance or confidence and their picketing system is very complete. The coaling of the Banffshire and Aoranei is proceeding with non-unionists. April 27.
Sydney coal lumpers’ delegates attended a meeting of the Newcastle Wharf Labourers’ Union, which informally decided to assist the local lumpers to the extent of refusing to load vessels which usually coal at Sydney. '
