SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
MARTON. A special meeting of above was held last night. Present—Mr J. J. MoDonald, chair; Kev. D. Gordon, Messrs Richardson, G. M. Daven* port, Way, Little, Dolby, S. J, Davenport and Morgan. After routine business had been done a vote of thanks was passed to the secretary for his work during tli© year. The householders meeting was then held. Mr J. J. McDonald was voted to the chair. The report of the outgoing committee and the balancesheet were read and adopted on the motion of the Rev. Mr Carr, BeeondedbyMr Houghton. The Rev. Mr Carr explained that in his opinion I the small attendance at the classes in religious instruction, which led to their being dropped, was due to the fact that the classes were not held during school hours. The following candidates were nominated for the committee : The Revs. Gordon and Carr, Messrs McDonald, Richardson, S. J. Davenport. G. M. Davenport, Little, Way. Dolby, Morgan, Gomez, Houghton. Messrs Mossman and Wilkes were appointed to act as scrutineers. The old committee was re-elected and chose Mr J. J. McDonald chairman, Mr H. H. Richardson secretary, Mr S. J". Davenport treasurer. BULLS. The following report was presented to the meeting of householders last night:—Committee meetings have been held regularly every month during the year. The roll number shows a gratifying increase in the number of pupils attending the school, the present number being 134. The Inspector's report was very satisfactory and the committee have congratulated the headmaster, Mr Gray and his staff on their successful work. Tho two senior class rooms have been supplied with individual desks which are found to bo a great improvement upon tho old ones. Tho committee had given careful attention to tho sanitary state of the school and improvements have been made to the teacher's residence. During tho year prizes to the value of £lO were distributed amongst tho children. The donation of £2 2s from Mr E. J. Keillor as a special prize to tho school garden funds was gratefully acknowldged. Tho committee expressed the opinion that too many holidays wero. granted during the vear and recommended that tho number be reduced in future. Tho Treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £1 12s.
In moving the adoption of the re j port and balance sheet Mr King congratulated the committee and teachers upon tho satisfactory results obtained.
Mr Downes proposed that the efforts made by the committee to. form technical classes in Bulls bo placed on record. He said the young people of tho district did not seeni to realiso the advantages to be gained from these classes. Ho had now had hopes that in conjunction with Ohakea a successful effort would be made this year. The committee elected are—Messrs T. W. Downes, chairman; R. Wearne, O. Hinkley, E. Blake, W. Kearney, W. Homes and T. McGregor. Mr Wearne was elected secretary and Mr McGregor treasurer and trustee to the new committee. Committee meetings will bo held oil the last Monday in every mouth.-
RONGOTEA. The report and balance sheet submitted were approved—a credit balance of £1 15s was shown. Committee : Rev. H. P. Wilson, .Tamos Penney, J. Broadbelt, David Wilson, T. B. Sutton and John Glover. At a meeting of the newly-elected committeo'Mr James Penney was elected chairman and Mr J. Bowater secretary and treasurer. TAIHAPE. Tho following committee were elected :—Messrs Arrowsmith, Darvill, Aldridge, Bray, Boyne, Green, McLaughlin, Tarrant and Rev. Bishop. Mr Arrowsmith was elected chairman and Mr Darvill secretary. A hearty vote of thanks was ;accorded the committee for their conduct of the business during the last year. A strong resolution was passed expressing the urgency of the immediate enlargement of the school. It was pointed out that tho present accommodation for 203 pupils wheroas 296 were now on the roll. HALCOMBE. Mr Cawood presided. Tho report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Tho former referred in appreciative terms to the work done by Headmaster Strachau and Ids staff, the success that had attended the former's efforts to impart practical instruction in agriculture to the children, the improvements that had been effected in the school residence and schoolhouse. The latter showed a debit balance of £3 19s lOd. Eleven gentlemen were nominated as committeemen and the ballot resulted—Messrs McElroy, Burcham, Bell, O. Wiskncwski, Adams, Wapp and Gichler. 'Mr Burcham was elected chairman.
SANSON. Committee: J. H. Perrott, chairman; Jas. A'Court. W. J. Phillips, A. J. Healey, W. Brookio, J. McDonoll, J. Anderson, secretary. UPPER TUTAENUI. Committee: Messrs T. Bartlctt, chairman; James Still, 'secretary; R. Neumann, W. Ebden, Taylof, J. Goddard and A©. C. Snellgrove. HUNTERVILLE. Committee: W. G. Ashworth, chairman ; H. J. Middlemas, secretary ; R. Campbell, R. Cole, W. Howie, J. Dobbs, W. Lyall. EEILDING HIGH SCHOOL. In the Annual Report it- was stated that the school gardens had not been the success anticipated. ' The Ministers of the town were giving religious instructions every Friday afternoon after school hours, and were reported to have good attendances of scholars. The report of the Inspector on the' examination had not been as favorable as in the past. It was recommended that a piece of ground adjoining the school ground bo purchased for paddocking the scholars horses. Elected :—W. T. Britnnvell, chairman, Messrs W. Bowater, J. Duulop, E. J. Mines, W. Cornfoot, and Revs. T. Budd, W. F. Stent, and P. Beocroft. LYTTON. STREET. The Annual Report stated that attendance had increased from 190 to 220. the inspection and examination reports reflected greatest credit on the teaching staff. It was suggested that the in-com-ing committee endeavour to get an addition to the school building. The following were elected: —E. Goodbehere, chairman, K. Tolley, C. H. Burnett, G. Gould, F. Thompson, A. Richmond, E. A. Allen, J. W. Bramwoll, and W. L. Fetch.
Bible Lessons
Per Presr \isceiation Gisborne, April 23. The movement to introduce the Nelson system of Bible instruction in public schools culminated in the return last evening of a school committer pledged to institute the scheme in the Gisborne schools. "VVoobville, April 23. The householders meeting for the election of a new school committee last evening was a farce, sis members of the old committee ;-nd three householders being fpresent. This was owing to the Board to advertise the meeting here in the local papers. No committee was appointed and a resolution condemning the Board's treatment of the district was carried. Blenheim, April 28. A meeting of householders: at Blenheim unnimously recommneded the incoming school JJcommittee to favourably consider the adoption of the Nelson system of religious instruction in schoole.
