Mr Deakin, interviewed, said the Commonwealth Government took no halfhearted view of immigration, and -were only awaiting something tangible to begin work in the United Kingdom in real earnest. If the negotiations with South Australia concluded satisfactorily the possibilities of the magnificent "Northern Territory would he adequately placed before the British people. It was not probable that many of the very special class of labourers required for work in Queensland cane fields would be forthcoming in Britain. He hoped that the offer now made to emigrants to w’ork m the cane fields would be extended to other agriculturists.
