Lord Elgin will open the Colonial Conference. It will sit thrice weekly and it is expected there will bo at least ten sittings. The Navy League will xnemoralise the Colonial Premiers urging co-opeiation with the Motherland, suggesting the establishment of Colonial naval militias, recommending a naval Imperial reserve, vessels to bo stationed at Colonial ports to enable the militias to drill and cruise, officers and men to be interchangeable with the British navy. Mo Room for State Premiers, Hobart, April 8, The Premier has received a despatch from Lord Elgin dealing with the representation of the States at the Imperial Conference. It is laid down that the States surrendered to the Commonwealth some of the most distinctive attributes of self-government in. the fullest sense of the word and that the great majority of subjects and the most important ones to . }ie discussed at the Conference are now 1 the businpss of the Commop.we.ajth alone. For this reason the Imperial Government was pot able to arrange for separate representation.
