Christchurch, April 6. Tho Hon. Mr Millar arrived from Dnucdiu last night, and will inspect the workmen’s homes at Sydenham to-day, also some laud offered for further homes. Ho loaves to-night for Wellington. Mr Millar gives a flat deuin,l to tho report that an officer is going home to bring out labouring men owing to tbo scarcity of skilled and unskilled labour. Ho says tho policy tho Government determined on some time ago is to give assisted passages to domestic servants and agricultural labourers only. „ m The Grand Lodge of Templars closed last night. The business was mostly formal. A special committee of tho City Council, to consider means of improving tho city’s supply of electricity, visited tho Waimakariri River, and inspected the proposed intake for water supply and tho site suggested for a power plant. Tho committee will report early. A largo party of railway traffic managers, engineers, and representatives of flic Tourist Department will visit Hamucr in connection with the proposed motor service. It is understood that a move will ho made to have the service in operation at an early date. .: It is possible tho Eaugiora Municipal Gas Works will be in operation iu a fortnight. The" number of consumers is largely in excess of tbo estimates ou which the works wore based, and the enterprise is likely to bo very profitable.
