A SUICIDE PREVENTED.

Christchurch-, April 5. A most painful incident occurred this morning when a young girl named Eva Williams, 20 years of age, a resident of Aikman’s Rood, Papanui, attempted, apparently in a fit of desperation, to drown herself by jumping into the river from tho Victoria-street bridge. A lady who was passing at the time heard the splash and gave the alarm, and after some difficulty the girl was brought ashore, despite her protestations and appeals to bo allowed to drown. A doctor was called and the girl was taken to tho hospital where she progressed favourably towards recovery.
