Press Association. — Copyright. Melbourne, April 5. A letter from the British ConsulGeneral in San Francisco says : —From the workman’s point of view the situation here is deplorable. The Unions have seized San Francisco in a relentless grip and are refusing to allow any new members to join the Unions with the object of limiting supply and forcing up prices of labour. The expenses of living are so high that a man earning five dollars a day, if married, can only manage to keen his head above water.
