THE TRADES CONFERENCE.
Per Press Association Dunedin, April 2. At the Trades and Labour Conference a motion by Mr McLaren (Wellington) to the effect that the remarks made by the Attor-ney-General and the Minister of Labour concerning the Australian slaughtermen stirring up the strike were quite uncalled for, offensive, and contemptible, provoked considerable discussion, and was eventually carried by 15 to 4. An amendment was then put to delete the words “ offensive and contemptible,” and this was lost by 10 to 9. A resolution to “restrict the importation of labour under contract” was adopted as against an amendment to “ prohibit” such importation.
It was resolved to recommend that the Inspector of Awards be empowered to got an expert to assist whuro necessary.
Eesolved ;—That tho State establish clothing and boot factories, flour and woollen mills, butteries, ironworks and shipbuilding yards, and run its own coastal and shipping trade. It was agreed that Government be asked to cancel the agreement with tho company for the lease of Parapara iron deposit, and that tho State be asked to take control.
