Mr Bignell, ov-Mayor of Wanganui, an experienced contractor, lias just returned from a, visit to Auckland via the Main Trunk Railway, and ridicules the statement recently made by a Christchurch resident that the lino will take three years to complete. Mr Bignell is confident that communication will bo opened at the end of next year, and was assured by the contractors for the Makatoto Viaduct (which ho says is the key to the position) that it will bo completed by Christmas by which the railhead will have reached there. The work for two other small via-' ducts is also •well in hand, and more than half of the 30 miles between the railheads is already formed and ready for rails, while the big cuttings in tho otlw? portion are well in Land,
