The steamer Alabama lias arivod from Sumatra with a cargo of 25,000 cases of benzine. When off Java the head, boatswain and tbo Chinese carpenter wont down the forepeak with a naked light and a terrific explosion followed. The Chinaman was blown on dock, shockingly burned and died two days later. The rest of the Chinese crew, with the fireman, bolted aft when the explosion took place and left tbo chief mate to take tbo wheel. The captain and four European officers played the hose on the bulk-head between the cargo and the forepeak to keep it cool and soon got tbo fire in the forepeak under control. The ship’s stores wore all destroyed. Had the bulk-heads, through which the gas from the benzine came out, become heated nothing could have saved the ship.
