Ernest Lowthiau, chairman of the meeting of tho Social Democratic Federation at Carlisle, attacked the Liberal leaders for not fulfilling their election pledges. Ho described Mr Burns as tho most callous and reactionary president of tho Local Government Board for generations. The Social Democratic Federation adopted a resolution urging an amendment to the Unemployed AVorkmen’s Act providing for the. immediate granting of powers to focal authorities to acquire land to engage in industries, and adopting universal adult suffrage. Several speakers attacked Mr John Burns, sarcastic reference being made to “ the flight Honorable renegade’s giib pharisaioal cant.”

Other speakers declared that Mr Burns was now unmasked. Instead of permeating the Liberal party with socialism lie had become saturated with Liberal cant. London, April 1. At tho Independent Labour Conference Mr Ramsay MacDonald, in a presidential address referring to Lord Rosebery,s of their programme as confiscation, regretted that a critic who represented the interests of landlords and Jewish financiers as ho did, did not apply his maxims to his own conscience and class.
