Mr Herbert Gladstone, Home Secretary, hns.grnnted a respite to llayncr (sentenced to death for the murder of Mr AAfllliam AVhiteley) with a view to altering his sentence to imprisonment for life. Many newspapers complain of the agitation on behalf of Rayncr. The Daily Midi declares that it is a grave public scandal, and that it is reducing the administration of justice to a sentimental travesty.
