I- The Marton Sports Club lias everything well in hand for their coming sports. The recent rain lias greatly improved the tracks, which are now in excellent order. A splendid courso has been formed for the .- jumping competitions. For theso . events not only record entries have been received, but some of the best jumpers on the West Coast are taking part. Miss Campbell, of Wan- • ganni, has been granted permission to ride her own horse in the Hunters Competition, provided the minimum weight is carried. The running and cycling events promise to bring out large fields, and generally the contests should be keen, and as the probable results are so cleverly hidden by the handicappers, every race should have its exciting in- * terest. At a meeting of the commit- : tee last evening encouraging reports . were received, so that, given a fine j day ou Wednesday next, the gathering should be one of the most suc- ' cessfnl yet conducted. The accept- ' anco fee in the Wheel Race has been ■ reduced from 7s 6d to 2s 6d, and this alteration should be appreciated by . the riders. It has been decided toadniit all competitors free of charge to the sports. The first horse event —Maiden Hunters—will start punctually at 12.30, and owners should have their mounts on the ground at noon. Mr H. Hunt has been appointed referee of sports in place of Mr C. Gibbons, who will bo unable to be present. Mr S. Hunt has been appointed lap-taker for the cycling events, and Sir Swinburne clerk to the judges in the horse events. A strong committee will meet on the Park on Saturday afternoon to make final preparations and mark off the ground. THE CONCERT. An unusually attractive programme has been prepared for Marton Sports concert and no doubt the public will show 'their appreciation of the Committee's efforts by their attendance at the Opera House on Monday evening. A glance at the items publishod to-day will show that outside talent will be well represented and the entertainment should be a distinct success. Members of Mr Bert. Crozier's Orchestra have had many weeks of hard and enthusiastic practice and a veritable feast of music is promised. Besides giving two overtures the orchestra will play a selection '' Erin's Melodies, "introducing vocal numbers "Terence's Farewell" by Miss Paton, of Ashhurst, and "Minstrel Boy," by Master Frank Lound. This has been specially arranged by Mr A. E. S. Crozier. The first appearance of Now Zealand's champion Highland dancer—Mr McKenzie Forbes—should be welcomed by Martonians, and Mr Bell, of Palmerston, and Miss Paton are vocalists of special ability and will each give two numbers. Something good is promised from Mr G. Swan, the popular reciter, whose inimitable sketches "will be of much humour. A quartette number "That -was the Soldior's Song" by Messrs A. Hunt, (English), G. H. Barne'tt (Scotch), S. Miuifie (Irish), and F. Lound I (Colonial), should be well received and the item by the "Lousiana Coons''' will give further variety to the evoning's entertainment. It will be seen that a nominal charge will be made for admission and a record house should result. Ashhurst Sports. The first annual meeting of the Ashhurst Athletic Club was held on Wednesday in fine weather. There was a good attendance. The president of the club, Mr P. Hanlon, was assisted by a hardworking committee, who got the events off up to time. In Mr Frank Slattery, the club has an energetic and obliging secretary. The day's programme was ' concluded with a concert and dance in the !'. hall in the ever.ing, which was largely attended. Eesnlts: Maiden Bace, 150 yards : A. Bentley 1, C. Tranter 2, E. Thomas 3.
