OBITUARY.
Mr Patrick Haggarfcy.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) There passed away to his final rest on Monday, 11th March, ono of the earliest settlers in Kimholton Mr Patrick Haggarty. Born in the town of Konmaro, County Kcjry, in the year 1835, ho joined thfe firth Regiment of Foot at the early age of 20. He saw active service iu-the Crimean War, receiving 'tho Crimean war medal and clasp for Sebastopol, also tho Turkish medal. Coming to New Zealand he passed through the Maori war, receiving the New Zealand medal. At the close, of his military career which limed years ho re, ceived high commendations from his commanding officers. Eyontnally ho determined to settle in Now Zealand and chose Birmimrlmm the IC!"- 1 - " of to-duv. W<*•«•'■>'■• 1 ins wife and young family ho was one of the first" three settlers who took up land in this district. For 20 years he endured the trials and privations of tho pioneer settler and with true native endurance and energy established a homo for himself, his wife and family. During that long period he earned the respect of the entire neighbourhood. Much sympathy is felt for his widow and family. He leaves a family of eight, one son—Mr Patrick Haggarty and seven daughters, three of whom are married, Mrs White and Mrs Sears both of Utiku, and Mrs Foster, of Ghingaiti.
