OROUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

I TSo monthly meeting was held yesterI day. Presents Crs Q-. Wheeler (chair- | . msm), J. Vincent, T. Bowling, H. Mortenf sen, H. S. Comfoot, and W. G. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE. From Leila Pemberton, reminding Council of her application for land and old road out off by deviation of Spur road. —To bo asked to give a price. From the Gorge ferryman, asking if Mr Harding’s passes carried his employees over the ferry both night and day.— Hours between 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. only. From the Bunnythorpo School Committee, and iho Kairanga County Council, in reference to a nuisance at the Dried Milk Factory.—The chairman to consult with County solicitor with a view of taking legal action. From J. E. McLennan, re stating the grounds of his application for the metalling of Williamson’s road, accompanied with a sketch plan of his property,—The Council again declined on principle to make or metal-a road situated out of the County. From Commissioner of Crown Lands requesting the Council to prevent stock from being turned out on the Oroua river bed, where they destroyed willows planted for protection of the banks.—The Commissioner to be informed that many of the willows are planted on private property, and the difficulty is for a ranger to distinguish between private property and what is not. The Council will be only too ready to clear the stock off the river bed if the settlers would co-operate. From the Pahiatua County Council, stating that the toll on the upper Gorge bridge would bo abolished on the removal of tho toll on the lower ferry. ■ From Treasury, notifying tho payment of J6?‘l2 2s Cd to the credit of tho Council, being subsidy on rates collected. From Arthur Harding, stating that the cutting at the Lower Gorge ferry was in a bad state, tho road being very narrow and soft, and drawing attention to spread of - blackberry bushes in the vicinity.— Engineer to take necessary action. From H. Trcmewan, stating that H. Hart would let the Council have metal for tho creamery road at 4d a yard. From H. Wilson, asking if the Council intend the operations of tho Noxious Weeds Act to apply to live gorso hedges. —lf tho hedge is not on tho road and kept trimmed sucL hedges would not be interfered with. From iho Kiwilca County notifying that it was reluctantly compelled to request tho Govornor-in-Council to decide bow tho rates from Messrs JlcLennan’s and Bowen’s properties should bo spent.—No action taken. The chairman remarked that the Oroua Council would have a good claim for a contribution from the Kiwitea County Council towards the upkeep of the ilakino : And Kimbolton roads. ' From John Harrison, stating that water ; was now low enough at Eaukawa to finish | low level bridge.—To be attended to at 1 once. From E. Harper, asking tho Council to metal the Cemetery read as far as Iris , sections. —Engineer to report. From the Treasury, stating that owingto tho omission to quote section JIS of the Public Works Act, 1505, the special order for the application of a loan for £625 re Pohangina bridge would have to be made afresh. The Health Officer reported that after frequent visits a nuisance at the Bunnythorpa cheese factory had been abated ■ but there was still trouble at tho Chelten ham piggery; which was not kept clean or ventilated. He strongly condemned j the state of a cow bail and yard in this district, and also at Taonui, the conditions in .each case being very dirty.— i Legal action to be taken in respect to th.fi ; complaints made. It was resolved that tenders be called for tho supply of gravel as per tho Engineer’s report, also tho making tho culvert at Marshall's creek on the Makino road. Further that men be started in the ridings mentioned. It was resolved That owing to the increase of traffic both cn the railway and main road between Ashhurst and the railway station, tho Eailway Department bo requested to make tho approaches the full width and to erect a bridge over the railway line in lieu of tho present inadequate and dangerous crossing. That Mr B, Pool’s tenders for the three contracts on the Spur road be accepted that of Mr Lawrence for the Water Sued road contract, and that of Bayless and Co., in Creamery road, Ashhurst, That the Engineer take steps to have tho gorse and sweet briar removed on Quaddie’s road. That tho Engineer request tho support of the Ilangitikei County Council to prevail upon the Government to deck the Kakariki railway bridge on a level with (he rails. The Engineer was instructed to put on a man permanently in the Hiwinui riding.
